This chapter contains ELISA products for the quantitative measurement of free steroids in saliva samples. The measurement of free steroids in serum or plasma samples is very questionable. There are several publications in the scientific literature proving that almost all commercial assays for measuring free steroid hormones in serum do not give reliable results. Therefore the better alternatives are either equilibrium dialysis or saliva testing. Moreover saliva testing also offers the advantage of non-invasive sampling.

We are highly recommending to always use the strategy of multiple sampling. Due to the episodic secretion pattern of steroid hormones in saliva single samples will always give arbitrary results. Such episodic secretion pattern we also can see in serum. Therefore the investigation of single serum samples has to be seriously questioned.

The determination of free steroids in saliva is especially useful in pediatric endocrinology, fertility testing, HRT monitoring, and in antiaging medicine as well.
